Robert Gordon LaCombe was born July 31, 1940, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His family moved to China Lake when he was 6. He graduated from Burroughs High School in 1958 and from Santa Clara University, in Santa Clara, California, in 1962 with a degree in mathematics. He married his wife, Lynn, in 1966, and worked for NOTS/NWC for more than 35 years.
