Reba was born in Westfir, Oregon to Vernon and Minnie Smallwood. She graduated from high school valedictorian in 1954 and earned a scholarship to the University of Oregon.She married Gerald Alger of Lakeview, Oregon and the two lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana; Pittsfield, Massachusetts; Sunnyvale, California; and Pasadena, Texas before moving to China Lake in 1972 where Jerry took a position as a reliability engineer at the Naval Weapons Center.
